3/26/03: Promise

The bicycle delivers on the promises of automobile advertising way more consistently than cars do. Speed, power, freedom, control -- alive-ness -- are the feelings that car ads sell. These are feelings I experience pretty regularly as I do my bicylce commute between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Frustration, anger, boredom -- trapped-ness -- these are the feelings of a car commute. No wonder so much money and creative energy is spent to convince us otherwise.
